Isaiah: The Fifth Gospel (2024)

Grace Anglican Church, Spring 2024

Description

The book of Isaiah is sometimes called the “Fifth Gospel,” for few Old Testament books have influenced the Christian imagination as strongly as Isaiah. Indeed, the New Testament draws from the book of Isaiah more frequently than from any other Old Testament book (except the Psalter). Rhetorically, Isaiah straddles the most important moment in Israel’s history–the exile–and provides hope of God’s grace in the midst of punishment for human sin. Yahweh proves Himself to be “the Holy One of Israel” and the true Lord of all peoples. This class will consider Isaiah’s contribution to biblical theology, Isaiah’s place in God’s redemptive story that spans the Testaments, and how to get the most out of reading Isaiah.
