   I was a big supporter of Sojourners until the last presidential election. They used to be more grassroots and un-partisan, which is much different than being “bi-partisan,” which in itself is code for partisan but nice. They were a pragmatic, prophetic organization that devalued themselves into a run-of-the-mill Washington think tank and activist group.

   There is a need for a prophetic message toward our government, but those types of messages can’t be trivialized into talk show interviews, talking points and slick media campaigns.

     @Thomas: Thanks for your comments. I believe we need organizations to stand up for the poor and mistreated. People of like goals, though, can disagree fundamentally on the ability of government entities to achieve positive outcomes, as opposed to defending negative rights.

     Have you ever read Olasky’s The Tragedy of American Compassion? It’s worth a read; he does quite a lot of journalistic, historical fact-digging into the origins of American charity. I think he gets to the heart of the problem with a lot of modern social and economic policy: good intentions, but flawed premises.
