Sermon: An Eternal King (2 Samuel 7:8-16, 22-24)

This is the audio (26:03, 24.4 MB) of a sermon I preached at the Mill Street (5th-12th grades) campus of Grove City Christian Academy on February 2, 2024. The students have been working through the book of Samuel, and it fell to me to preach from 2 Samuel 7. The Scripture reading by a student was inaudible on the recording, but you can read it here: 2 Samuel 7:8–16, 22–24.

My 13-year-old son came up to be afterward and shook my hand, so I’ll take that as a sign that I didn’t embarrass him (and my daughter) too badly!

Here is an excerpt:

We’re going to look at the covenant, the promise that God makes with David. There are lessons in the story for us, especially in how David responds to God’s grace. And this story moves the grand story of God’s plan for his people, forward, in important ways. But probably most importantly, we see in the promise to David a picture of how God will provide for his people by sending his Son, Jesus, descended from David. And Jesus, unlike David and other human kings, provides for our deepest needs.
