Sermon: This Law Is Not Too Difficult for You

This is the audio (22:34; 20.6 MB) of a Sunday sermon I preached at Grace Anglican Church in Grove City, PA, on July 13, 2025. The main text was Deuteronomy 30:1–14, which was read before the audio begins. Other lessons included Psalm 51 and Matthew 5:13–20, and I made reference to Deuteronomy 4:5–9; 6:5; 10:12–13; Rom 7; 10:5–13; and Phil 3:6. Continue reading

Did the Medium of En-dor Really See Samuel’s Spirit?

I had a student last year who wrote a paper on 1 Samuel 28 in South Asian context. It was a very interesting paper, informed by his Christian community’s encounters with spiritualists and mediums. One of the things that we discovered as he was doing his research, as that historic Christian interpreters have been divided on the question of what exactly the medium (and possibly Saul) actually witnessed when she conjured Samuel’s elohim. Continue reading

Are Israel’s Salvation and Land-Grant Unique in the Bible?

It is interesting to consider the Hebrew Bible’s reflections on YHWH-orchestrated exodoi, migrations and conquests, besides the Israelite exodus from Egypt and the conquest of Canaan. Continue reading

Research as Foot-Washing

The knowledge of God and His world through revelation, reason, and experience should never be for our own sake alone. We are pedagogues, leading our students to the fount of knowledge and teaching them how to drink for themselves. The knowledge we seek for them (research) and to give them (instruction) is not just for our enjoyment (though we do enjoy it) or their entertainment (though occasionally they are entertained!), but to help them live fulfilled lives and to make good judgments. Continue reading

A Wise and Understanding People

Under what terms of engagement should we as Christian researchers join the broader academy in this search for knowledge? In research, we stand on the shoulders of, and beside, other scholars in our fields. Besides the general imperative to conduct our research ethically—do the premises and aims of our research overlap with those of other convictions? Continue reading

New Article in EJT

My article, based on last year’s presentation at the meeting of the Fellowship of European Evangelical Theologians, has recently been published in EJT: “Technologising of Word and Sacrament: Deuteronomy 14:24–26 and Intermediation in Worship.” European Journal of Theology 28.1 (2019): 66–77. I’ve written in such a way that will be useful, I hope, to pastors and students as well as scholars of the Old Testament and media ecology. Continue reading
